Morning Star Memory Care bases its approaches to managing memory loss in the concepts of “habilitation” rather than rehabilitation.
Habilitation asks us to step into the world of the person with memory loss, rather than continue to expect them to conform to our world. Habilitation steps into this world by respecting the feelings and emotions of the individual, understanding the past, not to restore, but to maximize the capacities that remain. This approach allows caregivers and our staff to remain connected with the person as communication becomes more challenging.
Habilitation seeks to simplify the physical as well as the emotional space for the person with memory loss. Reduction of clutter, distractions, lighting design, and the number of decisions to maneuver through daily life are all important features of Morning Star Memory Care. Convenience for the individual is the focus of our design; dining, living and the ability to sit on the covered patio watching the wildlife, or take a stroll around our secure outdoor courtyard are integrated into this design of convenience.
Activities and events are tailor-made to residents, skills, interests, needs, and abilities. Morning Star Memory Care's activities and events program is an evolving and dynamic process adapting to our residents, rather than requiring them to participate in a pre-formulated or preconceived approach. What did the person enjoy, cooking, fishing, writing, art, crafts, reading, or music? Adaptive activities can bring these interests back to life in new and pleasurable ways. Expecting the unexpected, it is often the unplanned activity that generates the most pleasure, embracing those precious “moments of clarity.”
Families, both immediate and extended, play a vital role in shaping the services for each resident. Family and friends hold a treasure trove of information, and when shared creates a partnership of care to permit us to better understand prior behavior, interests, and needs. This “life history” enhances our ability to communicate, maintain current capacities, and create success rather than continue to remind the person of their loss. Success for family and friends is equally important as we work on ways to maintain positive relationships and experiences. Togetherness remains an important facet of the person’s life, through enrichment exercises family bonds can continue to be fostered. With a strong family council, community and volunteer involvement, you can rest assured that your loved one has nothing, but the very best of care!
